Chronological Order of Development of the Institute

 

1957:
Conception of the Hospital by the City forefathers
1963:
Foundation Stone laid at Parade Ground near Mahatma Gandhi Road which was subsequently transferred to the present location on Hosur Road Bangalore.
1970:
Taking over of the Hospital by the Karnataka Governmentvide G.O. No. HMA 84 MDA 68, dated 19thFevruary 1970 as there was no progress of work.

1971:
Creation and sanction of posts vide G.O. No. HMA 213 MEN 70, dated 21st October 1971.
1972:
Construction of the first phase of the building 13th December 1972.
1973:
Establishment of the Radio Diagnostic and Radiation Therapy Department with out- patient block: for other specialty needs with visiting Professors from the angalore
Medical College, Bangalore: 50 in-patient beds were also provided.
1975:
The second phase of the development—the functioning of a full-fledged Cancer Institute with fully organised and manned departments was achieved through Construction of the main in-patient block. accommodation for the out-door clinics :administrative wing, Operation Theatre Complex and ward wings. The inpatient block was commissioned with 150 beds In December 1975
1976:
Bed-strength increased to 160
1977:
Bed-strength increased to 180

1978:
Bed-strength further increased to 190; Completion of Kitchen Block during March 1978 and Laundry in June 1978 and Mortuary during November 1978;
1979:
Completion of Residential Blocks during April, 1979: Remodelling (air-conditioning) of the Operation theatre, Central Gas and Oxygen Supply Systems and Central Suction of O.T. complex. Remodelling of the laboratories (Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Cytogenetics).

Siddavanahalli Nijalingappa or S. Nijalingappa was the fourth chief minister of Mysore state. He was known as the architect of Karnataka`s unification. He was a rare and fervent Gandhian, Known for his honesty and integrity during his seven-year spell as Chief Minister saw the state develop in all spheres.
As Chief Minister, Nijalingappa paid particular attention to the states irrigation, power and agriculture. The construction of the Sharavathi hydel project was initiated and completed during his period. The foundation stone for six major and several medium irrigation projects, including the Upper Krishna Project was also laid during his tenure, though many of these projects remain incomplete even today.

Nijalingappa was instrumental in setting up Bangalore University, the University of Agriculture Sciences, Bangalore, medical colleges in Hubli, Davanagere, Gulbarga, Belgaum and Bellary, the National Institute for Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (Nimhans), Kidwai Institute of Oncology and Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum, Bangalore.
